Maps of Antiquity

Those with an interest in the early history of western civilization often study the the works of classical historians who document the rise and fall of Greece and Rome. These “original sources” include (but are certainly not limited to): Herodotus, Thucydides, Xenophon, Polybius, Caesar, Livy, Tacitus, and Suetonius. If you have read these works, you will know that it helps to have fairly comprehensive maps of the geographical and political terrain to appreciate many of the subtleties of the narrative.

To this end, we provide reference maps for use when exploring the historical writings of this period. These maps are organized by source and context. They are extracted from the following books.

These maps are typically scanned images of books that are currently in the public domain. Image sources are attributed where possible.
