Historical Atlas

These maps are from the 1923 and 1926 editions of William R. Shepherd’s Historical Atlas[1]. They illustrate regions of Europe, Africa, and the Middle East that surround the Mediterranean basin and command the most attention in the study of ancient Greece and Rome. Nomenclature and political boundaries are appropriate to the reference period. The contents of the atlas are subdivided by historical context in a bow to bandwidth considerations.

Referenced editions of this atlas are in the public domain, as are the specific images that are served. These images were digitized by the University of Texas. They request attribution with the phrase:

“Courtesy of the University of Texas Libraries, The University of Texas at Austin.”

We are happy to comply with this request and express our appreciation for their effort.
